Installation Instructions - TrimBOARD™
THE ATW PREMIUM SURFACE
There are a number of different types of PVC trim board available on the market ATW has chosen a trimboard manufactured using the CELUKA™ process, which produces a denser surface. By making the surface more dense it is harder and less likely to scratch and show minor surface dents and imperfections. The CELUKA manufacturing process also allows the manufacturer to add a propriety surface finish that gives the ATW TrimBOARD™ a far superior surface to accept latex paint if the user so desires. This surface also allows for the acceptance of paint without the need for a primer being applied. ATW TrimBOARD does not require paint, but should you desire to paint it, ATW felt that providing a board with a premium surface for paint adhesion was best. Light sanding may be required.
STORAGE AND HANDLING
- ATW TrimBOARD is a premium trim product and should be handled with care to avoid damage.
- When possible, it is best to keep ATW TrimBOARD covered and free of dirt and debris at the jobsite. If ATW TrimBOARD gets dirty, clean after installation. Products like Soft Scrub™ with a nylon brush do an excellent job restoring ATW TrimBOARD to its original manufactured state.
- When storing ATW TrimBOARD products store flat to avoid distortion
- If the material has staining that cannot be removed with mild detergent and water, use a mixture of ½ cup of bleach with a gallon of water to remove the stain.
CUTTING
- ATW TrimBOARD products can be cut using all types of saws, (Circular, Band, Saber, Table, Panel or Gang Rip)
- Good quality carbide tipped blades work best. Do not use fine tooth metal cutting blades.
- To avoid edge chipping it is recommended to cut multiple layers when possible or place the PVC on a layer of 3/8” or thicker plywood and adjust your saw blade to cut ¼” into the plywood.
DRILLING
- Use standard wood drills to drill ATW TrimBOARD products. .
- When drilling ATW TrimBOARD products be careful to avoid frictional heat build-up.
ROUTING
- Use standard router bits when routing ATW TrimBOARD products.
- ATW TrimBOARD routs best with carbide tipped router bits.
- ATW TrimBOARD products will have a crisp, clean edge after routing.
- Be certain that the material is properly secured before routing.
FASTENING
- Any woodworking fastener will work with ATW TrimBOARD products.
- When you want ATW TrimBOARD to adhere to each other, use Bond & Fill™ structural adhesive and filler. For further information on Bond&Fill visit: www.bondfill.com
- ATW recommends a high quality fastener such as stainless steel trimhead screw or hot dipped galvanized fastener.
- ATW TrimBOARD work well with nail guns, be sure to properly adjust your air pressure and experiment with scrap pieces before nailing finished product.
- ATW recommends using finishing nails only when the trimboard is bonded in place with a high quality construction adhesive.
- ATW recommends that all PVC products be installed with a high quality construction adhesive wherever possible. This will assist in limiting expansion and contraction.
- ATW TrimBOARD does not require pre-drilling unless a large fastener is used or product is installed in low temperatures or fastening is within ¼” of the edge or end of the board.
PAINTING
- ATW products do not require paint for protection, but may be painted to achieve a custom color.
- ATW TrimBOARD is manufactured a special proprietary surface that allows it to hold paint much better than all competitive PVC trim products.
- To paint ATW products, use a good quality latex paint. Some recommended paints include PPG Manor Hall Exterior Paints, PPG Sun-Proof Exterior House & Trim, Olympic Machine Coat, Sherwin Williams Super Paint Exterior Latex, Sherwin Williams A-100 Exterior Latex, Sherwin Williams Duration Exterior Latex, and Sherwin Williams Super Paint Machine Finish. Only light to medium colored paints with a light reflective value of 55 units or greater should be used over ATW TrimBoards. New heat reflective paint technology developed by Sherwin Williams now allows the use of darker colors on ATW TrimBoards. Vinyl Safe Color Technology prevents ATW trim from reaching its heat distortion value. Vinyl Safe Color Technology is available at your local Sherwin Williams store in Duration Exterior Latex Coating and SuperPaint Exterior Latex Paint.
- All you have to do is clean the surface lightly sand as needed and paint.
- Bond & Fill products should be used for plugging nail holes, filling seams, or repairing damage. Choose Bond&Fill Structural, FLEX or Painter’s according to your job. For more information on Bond&Fill visit: www.bondfill.com
GLUING
- Bond & Fill Structural adhesive and filler provides a strong PVC to PVC bond.
- For best results, apply Bond&Fill to all PVC joints to prevent joint separation.
- All glued joints should be secured long enough to allow adequate bonding time, do not over clamp.
REPAIRING DAMAGED SURFACE
- Bond & Fill works well for large damaged areas. For additional information on
Bond&Fill visit: www.bondfill.com
MOLDING/MILLING
- ATW TrimBOARDS products can be molded/milled using standard woodworking equipment.
MOISTURE
- ATW products do not absorb moisture. ATW products can be installed above or below grade.
EXPANSION & CONTRACTION
- ATW TrimBOARD is a solid cellular PVC product and will expand and contract with
changes in temperature.
- ATW TrimBOARDS fastened along its entire length with a high quality construction adhesive and fasteners will minimize expansion and contraction.
- When joints are glued on a long run of trimboards, allow ¼” expansion and contraction space at ends of the run. Seal this space with Bond&Fill which will allow for expansion and contraction with the movement of the structure.
- Bond & Fill structural adhesive and filler is recommended for joints and for bonding layers of material together.
- If after using Bond & Fill your joint separates, reapply Bond & Fill to the space after cleaning the joint well, or use an expandable caulking that will flex with the movement of the structure. Certain applications, depending upon environmental conditions such as extreme heat and cold, as well as building movement, will require the use of an expandable caulking in certain locations.
SPANNING
- ATW products are not to be used in load bearing applications.
Do not exceed 16” between fasteners.
