  • FastenMaster® TimberLok® (or equivalent) Exterior Wood Screws – 4" (minimum)

GutterTRIM™ by Advanced TrimWright, Inc. is a true "Boston" profile gutter that is installed using the same tools and fasteners as you would normally use to install a wooden gutter of the same profile.

  1. The GutterTRIM must be fastened securely through the fascia boards and directly into the rafter tails/structural members. Fasteners should be spaced at a maximum of 16” apart. When joining two or more lengths of gutter, fasteners MUST be applied into the two nearest rafter tails/structural members on either side of the joint. Fasteners should be a minimum of 4” long. Each must extend through the back side of the gutter and fascia boards and lock securely into the structural member.

  2. The GutterTrim should be installed with a fall (pitch) of ½" in 20’ to allow for proper water flow and to keep debris from collecting in gutter.

  3. Down-spout drops are typically located at ends of runs and corners. For extremely long runs, additional drops may be added within the run. The downspout drop should be positioned carefully – always at the lowest point in the run. Downspout drops can be installed by first drilling a hole through the floor of the gutter using an ordinary power drill and a 2” hole saw bit. Next, the PVC drop should be positioned within the hole with its highest point just slightly beneath the floor of the gutter. The drop can be temporarily secured in this position with masking tape. The final step is to apply Bond&Fill® Structural Adhesive/Filler into the gap surrounding the down-spout drop. For the most secure and water-tight, be sure to apply the adhesive/filler from both the top (gutter floor) and bottom sides. Once fully cured, the masking tape can be removed.

  4. Due to the expansion and contraction properties of cellular PVC, Advanced TrimWright, Inc. recommends that this product only be installed in sustained temperature conditions above 40°F and below 80°F.

Important – Joints and Mitered Ends

For a rigid, permanent joint between multiple lengths of ATW GutterTRIM or when preparing solid mitered corners, Bond&Fill® Structural Adhesive must be used to insure a strong, water-tight bond. It is also recommended that Bond&Fill Claw Gripping Biscuits (#20) be used to insure proper alignment. Once prepared, the following steps should be followed to achieve optimum results:

  1. A liberal amount of Structural Adhesive should be applied to the entire face of one adjoining end and inside each of the biscuit slots on both ends.

  2. The ends should be brought together gently. Care should be taken not to squeeze too much of the adhesive from the joint. The performance of the bond is compromised if the application is less than 1/8” thick. In addition, the ends should be joined together a single time. Repeated separation and re-joining will also compromise the performance of the adhesive.

  3. Both sections of gutter must be fixed into position. Each gutter should be fastened using the recommended hardware listed above. Prior to curing, excess adhesive can be removed from both inside and outside surfaces using a rag or putty knife. A slight overfill bead is recommended and will help to reinforce the strength o f the bond.

  4. In addition to the normal required fasteners, additional bracing should be considered to assure that there is absolutely no movement or stress on the joint until the adhesive is fully cured. (Minimum 24 hours)

If a flexible joint is required to accommodate some expansion/contraction, Bond&Fill® Flex Sealant must be used rather than Structural Adhesive. A gap of at least 1/8” should be left between the ends to allow for sufficient sealant. Apply a liberal amount of sealant into the gap overfilling slightly.

Rubber Sealing Membrane

In addition to properly preparing and bonding the joint, a rubber membrane flashing should be sealed over each seam to permanently insure a water-tight seal even if the joint were to open due to expansion/contraction. For this application ATW suggests overlaying each joint with an 8-inch wide (minimum) piece of rubber sealing membrane (rubber roofing grade). In order for the membrane to bond correctly, both the PVC gutter surface and the surface of the rubber membrane must first be cleaned with a solvent based cleaner that leaves absolutely no residue on either surface. Next, a thick layer of the membrane adhesive sealer should be applied to both the top and inside surfaces of the gutter and to the rubber membrane. Care should be taken to fully cover the structural bead on the inside corners of the gutter. Multiple coats may be applied to assure adequate coverage. Be sure to fully cover the top of the back edge and front lip of the gutter. The adhesive must set on the surfaces until each is dry to touch (10-30 minutes depending on conditions). Once set, carefully line the gutter with the rubber membrane starting at the back and smoothly working to the front lip. Starting from the center, press the rubber membrane securely into the adhesive sealer. You must make sure that all air bubbles have been squeezed out and that the two surfaces have attached completely. Last, carefully trim the excess rubber along the edge of the front lip with a utility knife leaving a straight and finished appearance.
